A native of Huating (today Songjiang in Jiangsu province), Dong Qichang (1555-1636) also used the names Xuanzai and Sibai. In the sixteenth year of the Wanli reign era, he passed the metropolitan examinations earning the jinshi degree. Subsequently, he reached a position as high as Minister in the Ministry of Rites. Dong Qichang excelled at calligraphy and painting. His ink landscapes exhibit a particular kind of clarity. His distinctive style is at once casual and refined. Dong himself inscribed the work, "Together with the daiyu Mr. Gu, I returned from Zuili. The rain delayed us at Fengjing. There, we examining famous art works by past artists. When I felt in the mood, I did this painting. A person of the past said, it is not often that one is moved to write and the feeling is right." The brushwork in Enjoying Antiquities at Fengjing is cultivated, not a single stroke is without purpose. It is an excellent work of calligraphy and painting by Dong.
