Fighting for a Scottish regiment employed by the Dutch, Stedman left for Surinam in 1774 to help suppress a revolt by former slaves. His book contained a wealth of information about natural history and the treatment of slaves in Surinam. This item is included in a collection of manuscript maps hinged in a folio album titled, Manuscript Maps for the South American Campaigns of 1806-7.
